THE YOUNG WIZARD OF PAKISTAN

Waseem Khatri is the reigning Scrabble Champion of Pakistan. He has the honor of being the youngest Scrabble Champion in Pakistan’s history. He won the coveted trophy in 2008 when he was only 18 and retained the title in 2009 and 2010, completing his hat-trick as winner. He is the second person in the history of PSA to do so. Waseem first showed his massive potential at very young age, having participated in the PSA inter-schools tournaments that are held every year. He further cemented his position as one of the best up-coming players by winning the junior categories. He progressed from Student to Master category within a matter of one year! His rise was phenomenal; at the time his colleagues were competing in the school categories Waseem was holding the title of National Champion while being a schoolboy.

Waseem represented Pakistan at the World Scrabble Championship in 2009, attaining the admirable 44th position out of 110 players, some of whom have been playing scrabble even before Waseem was born! He exhibited great skill in fighting vigorously against the World’s top Scrabble players and even defeating some of the former World Scrabble Champions.

Although a relatively new comer to Pakistan Scrabble Association, Waseem has to his credit a number of participations in international events. He participated in the I-Gate International Scrabble tournament in Bangalore, India. While he was in Kuala Lumpur to participate in the World Scrabble Championship in 2009, he did not let go off the opportunity to take part in the Causeway Scrabble held in Singapore in December 2009. He eventually slipped to 52nd position out of 140 players after remaining in the top 20 for most part of the event.

Waseem enjoys playing cricket and love music. He is pursuing his studies in Commerce and currently in enrolled as s student of Bachelor of Commerce. His love for scrabble has no limitations. Apart from playing (and winning most of the time) he love to teach the finer skills of the games to younger players. He has become a role model for the young players. Two of his younger cousins ate showing signs of things to come. I am sure you’ll heat their names during the current championship. He is well liked by all his senior players, not only because of his playing skills but also because of his good manners. Waseem’s highest single game score, according to his recollection is 665 although he passed the 600 marks quite a few times.

Our heart-felt congratulations to Waseem Khatri for his brilliant performances. We look forward to the day when he wins the coveted title of WORLD SCRABBLE CHAMPION.
